If my kids are not in camp every week this July, I know how quickly the question starts coming: “What are we doing today?”
The good news is that I do not need to plan a big vacation or book expensive activities every single day to make summer feel special. Around Toronto and the GTA, July is full of free and affordable festivals, outdoor movies, live performances, cultural celebrations, and easy community events that can turn an ordinary day into a fun family outing.
Whether I am planning for toddlers, school-aged kids, tweens, or a mix of ages, I like keeping a short list of local events ready so I have an answer when everyone starts asking what we are doing next.
Here are the family-friendly July events around Toronto and the GTA that I would add to my summer calendar.
📅 July 3–5
📍 Scarborough
I always think street festivals are one of the easiest summer plans with kids because there is usually something for everyone. Taste of Lawrence is one of Toronto’s largest street festivals, and it brings together food vendors from around the world, live entertainment, midway rides, games, local performers, and plenty of kid-friendly treats.
If my family wants to try new foods, walk around outside, and enjoy a lively neighbourhood festival without leaving the city, this is an easy way to make summer memories.
📅 July 11–12
📍 St. Clair Avenue West
Even if no one in my family knows how to salsa dance, I would still put this festival on the list. St. Clair Avenue West comes alive with Latin music, dancing, cultural performances, food vendors, and family-friendly entertainment.
For kids, the colour, music, movement, and energy make it exciting even if they are just watching from the sidewalk with a snack in hand.

📍 Wychwood Theatre & Artscape Wychwood Barns
On the kind of hot July day when I want an indoor activity, Toronto Fringe KidsFest is a great option. It is designed specifically for younger audiences and includes interactive theatre performances, storytelling, creative workshops, and family-friendly shows.
I love this kind of outing because it introduces children to live theatre in a way that feels playful and approachable, while also supporting local artists.

📍 Christie Pits Park, Fort York & Corktown Common
Outdoor movies feel like one of those simple summer traditions that kids remember. For the Toronto Outdoor Picture Show, I would bring a blanket, lawn chairs, snacks, popcorn, and the people who make movie night more fun.
These free movie nights are a relaxed way to enjoy a summer evening, especially once bedtime has naturally shifted a little later for July.

📍 Ontario Place
When I want something slower-paced, SummerSeries at Trillium Park is a lovely choice. Families can enjoy free outdoor concerts, family activities, waterfront walks, and beautiful views of Lake Ontario.
I would pack a picnic, give the kids space to move, and make the most of one of Toronto’s most scenic parks.
Toronto Caribbean Carnival Events

📍 Multiple locations across Toronto, including Nathan Phillips Square
While the famous Grand Parade takes place in August, Toronto Caribbean Carnival celebrations begin throughout July. Families can enjoy cultural performances, live music, Caribbean food, community events, colourful costumes, and entertainment across the city.
I think this is a wonderful way to experience one of Toronto’s most celebrated cultural festivals as a family, especially when choosing events that are designed to be welcoming for all ages.

📍 Mel Lastman Square
AlohaFest Toronto celebrates Hawaiian and Polynesian culture with a full day of family fun. I would go for the live music, cultural performances, traditional dance, food vendors, and children’s activities.
It is the kind of unique summer event that can feel like a mini tropical getaway without actually leaving Toronto.
Free Flicks at Harbourfront Centre
📅 Tuesday evenings throughout July
📍 Harbourfront Centre
For another easy movie-night option, I would check out Free Flicks at Harbourfront Centre. Outdoor films, waterfront views, warm summer evenings, and nearby restaurants or ice cream stops make this a simple plan that still feels special.
This one is especially nice for families with older kids who can stay up a little later and enjoy being out by the water.
Toronto Public Library Summer Programming

One of my favourite free summer resources is the local library. Many Toronto Public Library branches offer storytimes, crafts, reading clubs, STEM activities, special guest performers, and family programming throughout the summer.
These events often require little or no planning, which makes them perfect for slower weekdays when I want something easy, affordable, and close to home.
Making the Most of July Without Camp
I know not every family fills every week with camp, travel, or expensive attractions, and that is completely okay. Some of the best summer memories come from simple days spent exploring neighbourhood festivals, watching movies under the stars, enjoying live music, or discovering a new library program.
Keeping a short list of local events nearby makes it much easier for me to answer the daily question: “What are we doing today?”
Whether I am looking for a quick afternoon outing or a full-day adventure, July offers so many ways to enjoy summer together without leaving the GTA.
